Introduction to Coastal and Underwater Archaeology 
The NAS Introduction course is the first stage in the Nautical Archaeology Society training program, which WUAA is partnering with to build a community of trained advocates to help document and promote Wisconsin's maritime heritage. This one day course offers an introduction to archaeology and maritime archaeology, combining a mixture of classroom and practical sessions. This course aims to promote archaeology more broadly, but to also provide specific content that pertains to the incredible history of Great Lakes maritime tradition. This introduction course will also introduce topics such as dating methods used in archaeology and how the current legislation applies to our underwater cultural heritage.
By the end of the day participants will:
•Have been introduced to the basic principles and scope of maritime archaeology
•Be able to apply 2D survey methods to an archaeological site
•Have an understanding of your rights and responsibilities concerning underwater heritage in Wisconsin
•Be qualified to pursue further NAS training credits, which can be applied toward future conferences and higher level training courses.
When: Saturday April 13th (8am - 4pm)
Time: 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. - 1/2 hour lunch break, and 1/2 hour afternoon break

Summer 2012 Underwater Survey Projects - Volunteers Needed
The WUAA will conduct underwater site surveys in the Bailey’s Harbor area during Summer 2012.
WUAA will also continues the 2011 WUAA/GLSA survey project in the Milwaukee area on the wreck of the Norlond, a wooden steamer built in 1890. In 1922 she was caught in a heavy storm and foundered just south of Milwaukee with the loss of all on board. Dives will be made on Thursday evenings during the summer, with Gerry Guyer's boat. Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association announces International Training Partnership
with the Nautical Archaeology Society (UK)

The Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association has partnered with the United Kingdom's Nautical Archaeology Society to provide internationally recognized training to anyone interested in maritime archaeology. Divers and non-divers may now participate in workshop-based training seminars that are taught by professionals and recognized in more than 25 countries around the world.
The Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association (WUAA) is pleased to announce it is expanding its underwater archeology training program by partnering with the Nautical Archaeology Society (NAS) based in Portsmouth, United Kingdom.The forthcoming WUAA and NAS certification training workshop will be open to anyone interested in furthering their knowledge of underwater archaeology and maritime history. Internationally recognized, the NAS program provides the knowledge and skills to help archaeology projects in Wisconsin and around the world.Participants in training workshops learn underwater archaeological site mapping, historic ship construction methods, how to use archives in conducting historical research, artifact dating and identification, among other topics. Workshop participants have an opportunity to visit various research facilities, get behind the scenes tours of facilities and collections, meet and work with professionals, etc. "With a modular structure and a choice of specialized courses, the WUAA/NAS training programs will offer the public at large the chance to directly participate in maritime archaeology, while building a community of skilled volunteers, who will eventually be capable of carrying out their own maritime archaeology research projects" sated Kevin Cullen (WUAA Vice-President and professional archaeologist at the Discovery World museum in Milwaukee.)
